We started the campaign against a Fulham side that we did not know much about. We seemed to be superior to them in almost every department and that made it hard for us to know just how good we were or just how bad they were.
Going forward in that opening game we certainly looked good. Willian has no doubt added some class to our attacking options and Aubameyang and Lacazette were up to their usual goal scoring tricks. Aside from a couple of uncomfortable moments in the opening 10 minutes or so, we looked pretty solid against Fulham and this was great to see.
Having said all of this, I think it’s fair to say that most Arsenal fans agree that the win against West Ham was a bit fortunate. Passes were sloppy, confidence seemed to drop and for long periods of the game we were on the backfoot in our own backyard. They caused us trouble with Antonio and on another day could well have won themselves a penalty. We then managed to win the game with a nice move and went on to secure the three points.
However, I think the West Ham game was a good indicator for where this team is currently at. At times against Fulham it looked as though all of Arsenal’s issues had been solved and the West Ham game really disproved that. We struggled to create chances against them and this is a concern going forward for much of the fanbase. Defensively we didn’t look great either and I’m hoping that David Luiz and Tierney can return to that back three as quickly as possible. Though we weren’t at our best against West Ham, I’m sure that Mikel Arteta will identify weaknesses in the Arsenal side and do his best to bring either Partey or Aouar to the club in the next couple of weeks.
